“What’s the best time to dive?” It’s one of the questions we’re asked most. The nice answer is: in Lazio you can dive all year round. The honest one is: every season has its strengths. Here’s a month-by-month guide to choosing when to get in the water and what to expect.
Updated: October 2026
Yes. Our home sea is the Lazio coast, where the water temperature never drops to prohibitive values and, with the right wetsuit (or a drysuit), you can get out every month. But we don’t stop here: during the year we organise outings and trips also in Tuscany, Liguria, Puglia and elsewhere, in Italy and abroad. Sticking to Lazio — the topic of this guide — three things change instead: water temperature, visibility and sea conditions, and so the most comfortable type of outing changes too.
The rule of thumb: in summer warm water and easy outings, ideal for beginners; in autumn and early winter often the best visibility; in spring the sea “wakes up”. Let’s look in detail.
The water is still cool (roughly 14-18°C) and you need a good wetsuit, but the days get longer and the sea becomes enjoyable again. It’s a great time to get back in the water after winter, at your own pace, and for the courses that start up again towards the warm season. By May, marine life becomes more active.
It’s the most comfortable period, especially for beginners: water typically around 22-26°C, often calm sea, long days. Visibility is good but can vary near the coast on busier weekends. It’s the ideal season for your first sea dive after the pool and for group outings.
Many experienced divers actually prefer these months. Between September and November the water stays pleasant (summer “warms” the sea for a long time) and visibility is often at its best, with fewer crowds. In deep winter the water is colder (roughly 13-15°C): here the drysuit makes the difference and lets you enjoy clean, quiet dives.
It’s also the period when it makes sense to think about the Dry Suit specialty, if you want to dive all year round while staying comfortable.
If you’re starting out, summer and early autumn are the simplest periods. If you’re after the best visibility and calm sea, aim for September-November. In any case, the choice of the day depends mostly on sea conditions: we plan our outings watching the weather and the sea, so you get in the water when it’s really worth it. Take a look at the outings calendar and pick the date you prefer.
There isn’t just one. For beginners, summer and early autumn are the easiest (warm water, easy sea). For the best visibility, many prefer September-November. In winter you dive perfectly well with a drysuit.
Roughly 13-15°C in the coldest months. With a thick wetsuit it’s doable, but a drysuit makes the dive much more comfortable and lets you get out all year round.
At the surface yes (22-26°C), but as you go down you often meet the thermocline, a layer where the temperature drops. That’s why we recommend an adequate wetsuit even in summer.
Variable: it depends on wind, currents and crowds. It tends to be better in autumn and on calm-sea days. We choose the sites based on the conditions of the day.
Outings are published in our calendar, with date, site and meeting time. Just choose the one that suits you and book.
