FAQ

Becoming a scuba diver in Rome: your questions

The questions we're asked most often about courses, certifications and your first steps in scuba diving.

How much does a scuba course cost in Rome?

The cost depends on the level you choose (try dive, Open Water Diver, advanced courses) and on what is included: SSI learning materials, equipment use, pool sessions, sea dives and certification. At Top One Diving we work in small groups with clear packages: message us on WhatsApp or by email and we'll put together a tailored quote for you, with no obligation.

What are the requirements to start scuba diving?

For the try dive and the entry-level course you only need a few things: knowing how to swim, being in good health and being at least 10 years old for the SSI Open Water Diver. No previous experience is required. Before you start you fill in a short medical questionnaire and, as an ASD, we ask you for a certificate of fitness for non-competitive sports activity.

Which scuba certification is best to start with?

The ideal certification to begin with is the Open Water Diver: it is recognised worldwide and qualifies you to dive independently with a buddy down to 18 metres. It is the foundation you then build on with Advanced courses, specialties (depth, nitrox, wrecks, navigation) and professional levels.

Who cannot go scuba diving?

Scuba diving is suitable for almost everyone, but some conditions (significant heart or respiratory diseases, ear problems, pregnancy) require assessment by a doctor. If in doubt, we recommend a visit to a doctor specialised in diving medicine (DAN): safety always comes first.

How do you become a scuba diver in Rome with Top One Diving?

You start with a try dive in the pool, to experience the feeling of breathing underwater in complete safety. Then the Open Water Diver course combines theory (online or in the classroom), pool sessions and sea dives along the Lazio coast. At the end you earn an international certification valid everywhere.

How long does an Open Water Diver course take?

Usually a few weeks, depending on your pace and the schedule: it includes theory, pool practice and at least 4 open-water dives. With evening and weekend lessons it is also suitable for those who study or work.

I'm afraid of going underwater: can I do it?

Yes, and it is completely normal to feel a bit nervous at the start. Our method is gradual: first you breathe at the surface, then a few centimetres down, then your first descent — always with the instructor beside you. After the first few minutes, almost everyone relaxes and starts having fun.

Is scuba diving dangerous?

Recreational scuba diving, practised with qualified instructors and following the procedures, is a safe activity. We use modern equipment, safety checks and international SSI protocols, and we work in small groups precisely so we can keep a close eye on you.

I can't breathe from the regulator, is that normal?

Yes, at first it is a common sensation: breathing through the regulator is different from usual. In the pool we do gradual exercises until it becomes natural — it usually takes just a few minutes to get comfortable with it.

I'm not fit: can I still start?

Yes. Recreational scuba diving does not require athletic preparation: all you need is good general health and the ability to move calmly in the water. It is the equipment, not strength, that does the work.

How does ear equalisation work?

It serves to balance the pressure in your ears as you descend. They are simple techniques — such as the Valsalva manoeuvre, swallowing or moving your jaw — that we teach you step by step from the very first sessions.

Do I need a medical certificate?

Yes. As an ASD we are required by law to ask for it: you need a certificate of fitness for non-competitive sports activity, which you can get from your family doctor (if they issue it) or from a sports physician. Before you start you also fill in a short medical questionnaire.
